Installing a swimming pool is an exciting milestone in any custom home project. But what many homeowners don’t realize is that a successful pool installation begins long before the pool contractor arrives on site.

On a recent project in Delta, we completed much of the pool preparation before the foundation was even backfilled, ensuring the installation would be efficient, clean, and free of unnecessary rework.
Here’s why planning ahead makes all the difference.
Pool Installation Starts During Foundation Construction
Many people assume the pool contractor handles everything once construction is nearly complete.
In reality, some of the most important work happens much earlier.
Before we backfilled the foundation, we identified the location of the future pool mechanical room. This allowed us to install the necessary underground infrastructure while the excavation was still open.
By completing this work early, we avoided having to excavate around finished landscaping or concrete later in the project.
Installing Underground Conduits and Piping
Every pool requires equipment to operate properly, including pumps, heaters, motors, and filtration systems.
Because the mechanical equipment would eventually be located in a dedicated pool mechanical room, we installed the required conduits and piping before backfilling.
This included routing services from the future pool location directly to the mechanical room.
After the underground work was complete, the foundation was backfilled, and the exposed pipe locations were carefully protected until the pool contractor arrived later in the build.
Don’t Forget the Pool Cover Control
One detail that’s easy to overlook is the automatic pool cover control.
Building codes require the pool cover control to be within sight of the pool so it can be safely operated while maintaining a clear view of the cover.
If this control isn’t planned early enough, installing it later can become much more difficult.
The electrical wiring needs to run from the control location through underground conduit to the pool motor in the mechanical room.
Waiting until the pool contractor arrives often means the opportunity to install concealed conduit has already passed.
Avoiding Exposed Pipes and Wiring
One of the biggest advantages of early planning is achieving a cleaner finished appearance.
Because all conduits and piping were installed before backfilling, the completed project avoids exposed conduit or surface-mounted piping around the home.
Instead, everything is hidden underground or inside the wall where it belongs.
This not only looks better but also provides additional protection for the utility lines over the long term.
Coordination Makes the Difference
Projects involving swimming pools require coordination between multiple trades, including:

- Excavation contractor
- Electrician
- Pool contractor
- Plumbing contractor
When everyone understands the construction schedule and underground services are installed at the appropriate stage, the project progresses much more smoothly.
