When digging for a basement foundation, how do builders know exactly how deep to dig?

On a recent project in Delta, we began excavating for a large custom home. While it may seem like excavation is simply moving dirt, the process is actually guided by precise measurements and engineering plans.

Every inch matters.

Starting with Site Preparation

The first step in excavation is removing organic material from the site.

Organic material includes:

  • Topsoil
  • Grass
  • Roots
  • Vegetation
  • Other unstable surface materials

These materials are not suitable for supporting a foundation because they can shift, decompose, and settle over time.

Once the organics are removed, excavation can begin into the structural soil that will support the home.

The Importance of a Survey Benchmark

Before construction begins, surveyors establish a benchmark on the property.

A benchmark is a fixed reference point with a known elevation above sea level.

For this project, the survey benchmark was established at:

30.9 meters above sea level

This benchmark becomes the starting point for determining all critical elevations on the project.

Reading the Construction Plans

Once the benchmark is established, we review the building plans and locate the basement slab elevation.

For this home, the basement slab elevation is:

27.8 meters above sea level

To determine the excavation depth, we subtract the slab elevation from the benchmark elevation.

30.9 m – 27.8 m = 3.1 meters

Converted to imperial measurements, that equals approximately:

10 feet, 2 inches

This means the finished basement slab will sit 10 feet, 2 inches below the benchmark.

Why We Dig Even Deeper

The basement slab isn’t placed directly on the bottom of the excavation.

The final excavation depth must also allow room for several important building components, including:

  • Gravel base
  • Footing depth
  • Insulation
  • Concrete slab

To accommodate these materials, we excavate approximately two feet deeper than the final slab elevation.

For this project:

  • Finished slab elevation: 10 feet, 2 inches below benchmark
  • Additional depth for construction materials: 2 feet

Total excavation depth:

12 feet, 2 inches below the benchmark
