When you’re building a custom home, installing a beautiful finish is only half the job. The other half is protecting that finish until the homeowner moves in.

Stair treads are particularly vulnerable because they’re installed in an area that continues to see a lot of construction traffic. Workers, tools, materials, dirt, and wet boots can all create opportunities for scratches, dents, and damage.

At Clay Construction, one of our goals is to deliver a home that’s scratch-free, dent-free, and damage-free. That starts with proper sequencing and continues with the right protection

Proper Sequencing Comes First

Stair Treads

The best way to protect a finished product is sometimes to install it later.

We don’t install our stair treads as soon as the stairs are ready. Instead, we wait until the major finishing work around the home is complete.

Before the stair treads are installed, we make sure:

  • Cabinets are in place
  • Trim work has been completed
  • Countertops are installed
  • Large glass mirrors are finished
  • Glass walls are completed

This sequencing reduces the amount of construction activity taking place around the finished stairs.

It’s a simple principle: don’t install a finished product before the work that could damage it is complete.

Protecting the Stair Treads After Installation

Once the stair treads are installed, the next step is protecting them from the remaining construction traffic.

On this Delta project, we’re using protection products from Armor specifically designed to protect finished surfaces.

A fleece-lined protective sheet is installed along the stairs to create a barrier between the finished treads and construction activity.

We’re also using a pre-folded stair tread protector with a granular surface on top.

This type of protection serves two purposes. It helps protect the finished stair tread from dirt, grit, and damage while also providing additional traction for workers walking up and down the stairs.

Keeping Dirt and Grit Out

Protection only works if it stays in place.

That’s why the protective material is carefully taped along the sides of the stair treads.

The goal is to prevent grit and debris from getting underneath the protection. Even small particles trapped beneath a protective sheet can potentially scratch a finished surface when people walk over them.

Proper installation of the protection is just as important as choosing the right product.

Protecting More Than Just the Stairs

Stair Treads

Stairs are one example of a larger construction philosophy we follow throughout our projects.

A home can have beautiful cabinetry, countertops, flooring, glass, and millwork, but all of that quality can be undermined by careless construction activity during the final stages.

That’s why we think about sequencing, protection, and cleanliness throughout the entire build.

The goal isn’t simply to install high-quality materials. It’s to make sure those materials arrive at the end of construction looking the way they were intended to look.

The Details Matter

A homeowner may never know what went into protecting their stair treads during construction.

They may simply walk into the finished home and see beautiful, clean stairs without a scratch or dent.

But that’s exactly the point.

The quality of a finished home depends on hundreds of small decisions made throughout construction.

At Clay Construction, we believe those details matter. By installing finished products at the right time and protecting them properly afterward, we help deliver homes that are scratch-free, dent-free, and damage-free.

That’s the Clay Way™.
